Charlie's Manga Guide of Neon Genesis Evangelion
[Charlie's Anime Page... Back to Main Page] [My Slayers Page]
[Original Web Site Of Evangelion]

The manga version of the Neon Genesis Evangelion is written and drawn by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, a co-creator of the original TV series. He gives us his own personal interpretation of the story and the motives of the main characters. This leads to some differences between the story as told in the anime and as told in the manga, but more of that below...

The special collectors edition : Viz comics, the publisher of the English translation decided to publish a special edition of the manga alongside the "normal" version. In this version, the original Japanese page order and alignment have been retained, so you read the manga backwards. Also, the original katakana sound effect symbols have been left untouched. Beginning with Stage seven, translations of the sound effects have been printed on the inside cover.

The Issues : The issues of the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga are separated into "books". Each book equals two episodes of the NGE anime, with approximately three issues per episode. The synopses can be found on the NGE anime page, so only the major differences between the plots are noted here with some personal commentary.

More on the difference between the manga and the anime : It should be noted that the manga version is not "based" on the anime. Actually, the manga began appearing in Japan even before the anime show was aired. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who is responsible for the manga version, belongs to the creative team that created the Evangelion. His manga version is not the "correct" version of events. Likewise, the anime is not the "correct" version of events. Both are the interpretations of their respective creators of the story of the Evangelion. Repeat: neither takes precedence as the "canon of Evangelion". They both stand equal.

Book One

Stage One : Angel Attack

[Sachiel - 3rd Angel] 40 pages - 4 color pages - No letter column
Actual story: 40 pages

Synopsis:

This stage tells us how Shinji Ikari arrives to NERV HQ. After arriving to Tokyo-3 he hears a state of emergency being declared and the streets strangely deserted. Shortly afterwards witnesses the fight between the UN forces and the third Angel, Sachiel. Misato rescues him from being stamped underfoot and takes him to the NERV's HQ, an underground acrology built under Tokyo-3, to meet his father, Gendo. Meanwhile, Rei confronts the Angel in Unit-01, but already wounded, is no match for it...

What is different:

  • Shinji does not see Rei's apparition on the street. Is this because she is piloting the EVA at the moment? However, this is the only time when Rei shows psychic abilities in the anime (but I've seen it up to 0:9 only, don't blame me if you know better... and don't spoil it for me either! :)

  • Unit-01 has already been activated! Rei is piloting it.

  • Sachiel seems intent on attacking Shinji and Misato.

  • Sachiel is kneeling, not standing, after the N2 mine attack.

  • Misato is aware of the JSDF's plan to use an N2 mine on the Angel - she even knows exactly when it will happen!

  • Misato's car gets trashed twice (instead of just once). First by friendly fire, then by the N2 explosion shockwave.

  • Ritsuko is in the control room and not diving at the cage.

  • Gendo is sitting on a folding chair.

Notes:

  • After the N2 mine has exploded, one of the generals mentions they have "sacrificed a whole city". What city? Tokyo-3 seems just fine later...

The face of the stage:

Misato, page 18, panels 4-6 - "Ruined! Ruined!"

Stage two : Reunion,

[Evangelion UNIT-01] 32 pages - No color pages - Letter column
Actual story : 23 pages

Synopsis:

Shinji meets dr. Akagi in the halls of NERV HQ and confronts his father, Gendo Ikari, at the Evangelion cage. An argument ensues as Gendo tries to convince Shinji to pilot the Evangelion. Shinji refuses, and Rei is carted to the scene to pilot Unit-01 instead. The stage ends into a cliffhanger as the Angel blasts at Tokyo-3 with its main weapon... There are no major differences between the anime and the manga version.

What is different:
  • Ritsuko meets Misato and Shinji in a hall instead of an elevator.

  • Gendo, not Ritsuko, tells Shinji that he is going to pilot Unit-01.

  • Misato does not give her lecture to Shinji here, as in the anime...

  • Gendo speaks with Rei at the cage, not through the intercom.

Notes:
  • The manga sticks to the term 'Third Children' when referring to the pilots. Seems to have no basis whatsoever in the anime.

  • Notice that Shinji offers a different reason when refusing from piloting the EVA to battle. In the anime, he "just can't" but here he about admits that it is because he hates his father, Gendo.

The face of the stage:

Now here we have a grim stage - not much smiles here.
Rei, page 24, panel 5 - "[Pain]"

Stage three : Unit-01, Lift Off

[Shinji and Gendo] 32 pages - No color pages - Letter column
Actual story : 23 pages

Synopsis:

Seeing Rei in pain, Shinji agrees to pilot Unit-01 against the Angel. After a lengthy launch procedure the Evangelion is lifted up to the surface, where it immediately comes face-to-face with Sachiel. The end of this stage coincides with the end of anime episode 1.

What is different:
  • Shinji is not in danger of getting crushed by debris. Unit-01 does not exhibit strange behavior (spontaneous activation) as in the anime.

  • ...Misato gives her lecture to Shinji here.

  • Shinji's "I mustn't run away"-mantra is not used here.

  • Shinji's main reason for piloting the EVA is he doesn't want to let his father call him a coward.

The face of the stage:

Whoa, folks are getting all serious in this stage! The only smile comes from Gendo (It's true! Gendo!) and even that is more like a sneer.

Stage four : Silence...

[Misato] [Sachiel close-up] 32 pages - No color pages - Letter column
Actual story : 23 pages

Synopsis:

Shinji battles the Angel and gets badly trashed by it. The battle covers the entire stage. Parallels with the anime quite nicely, except for some minor details.

What is different:

  • Misato notes that the Angel had predicted their actions.

  • Instead of falling down after the first step, Shinji cannot stop the EVA and charges at the Angel instead. The end result, however, is same as in the anime: all contact is lost with unit-01 and it doesn't respond to any commands.

Notes:
  • Compared to the anime Shinji exhibits drastically different behavior. In no way he is a wimp, foolhardy is the more appropriate word...

  • Evidently the Angel has an ability to track the Eva's location. This conclusion can be drawn from the anime as well, it is told here with greater emphasis.

The face of the stage:

Two choices:

  • Maya, page 23 panel 2 - "That one did hurt!"
  • Misato, page 24, panel 3 - "Desperation"

Stage five : Angel Fire

[Explosion!] 32 pages - No color pages - Letter column
Actual story : 27 pages

Synopsis:

Shinji has fallen unconscious inside the EVA Unit-01. As he is having a vision of his dead mother, the damaged EVA suddenly goes berserk, attacking the Angel with full fury. Now it's the Angel's turn to get beaten... After a fierce fight the EVA defeats the Angel and it self-destructs.

What is different:
  • As Shinji lays unconscious inside the EVA, he has a vision of his mother which turns into the EVA (without the armor that covers her).

  • The battle between the berserk Unit-01 and Sachiel is told here, not later as in the anime.

  • The scene where Shinji sees the unmasked EVA face has been left out, probably because he already saw it in his 'dream'.

  • What?! Sachiel's AT field is... hexagonal! Also note that later (on stage 16) Ramiel uses an octagonal field.

Notes:
  • The scene in the beginning of this stage is very interesting. It foreshadows future revelations about the Evangelion Unit-01.

  • Notice Gendo's smug face as the Evangelion goes berserk. As if he had expected that to happen... But yes, in the anime Fuyutski comments "We've done it!" when the unit goes berserk.

  • Why Sachiel self-destructs? It is the only Angel which decides to die that way... and it should be well aware that it cannot hurt the EVA with the explosion.

The face of the stage:

Two choices again:

  • Shinji, page 6, panel 3 - "Hello, dear!"
  • Gendo, page 28, panel 5 - "Just as I planned it."

Stage six : I...Cry...

[Rei] 32 pages - No color pages - Letter column
Actual story : 23 pages

Synopsis:

Shinji wakes up in the hospital, and Misato arrives to pick him up from there. After a brief "discussion" Misato decides to take Shinji to live at her place. Meanwhile, Gendo has a little chat with the SEELE committee over the fight with the Angel and the expenses it has caused. Many vague references are made but not explained ^_^. On their way back home, Misato and Shinji stop at a sightseeing spot to gaze over Tokyo-3. This stage wraps the first book (and the second anime episode).

What is different:
  • Shinji has another dream of Unit-01

  • Apparently, he suffers no memory losses.

  • The meeting chamber of the I.P. Committee looks different.

  • Gendo and Shinji meet in the hallway, not at the elevator. Shinji sees him talking with Rei but ignoring him. As a personal note, I though the anime's elevator scene much more... intense.

  • Shinji has an argument with Misato at the hospital. She decides to take Shinji to live at her place to 'fix his personality'.

  • The 'homecoming scene' from the anime is missing. No Pen-Pen, no toothpicks and stuff.

Notes:
  • The SEELE member refers to an "Intel op". I guess this is the same as the publicity control scenario they discuss in the anime, as Gendo's answer to the question is the same ("It has already been taken care of.")

  • Looking back at the six first stages, Sadamoto has cut away the 'fan service' and some of the humor of the series. Perhaps he intends to tell a more serious story. On the other hand, he offers a bit clearer motivations for some characters, especially Shinji.

The face of the stage:

Misato, page 15, panel 6 - "*snap*"
