The special collectors edition :
Viz comics, the publisher of
the English translation decided to publish a special edition of the manga
alongside the 'normal' version. In this version, the original Japanese page order and alignment have been retained, so you read the manga
backwards. Also, the original katakana sound effect symbols have been left
untouched. Beginning with Stage seven, translations of the sound effects
have been printed on the inside cover.
The Issues : The issues of the NGE manga are separated into
'books'. Each book equals two episodes of the NGE anime, with
approximately three issues per episode. The synopses can be found on the
NGE anime page, so only the major differences between the plots are noted
here with some personal commentary.
More on the difference between the manga and the anime : It
should be noted that the manga version is not 'based' on the anime.
Actually, the manga began appearing in Japan even before the anime show
was aired. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who is responsible for the manga version,
belongs to the creative team that created the Evangelion. His manga
version is not the 'correct' version of events. Likewise, the anime is not
the 'correct' version of events. Both are the interpretations of their
respective creators of the story of the Evangelion. Repeat: neither takes
precedence as the 'canon of Evangelion'. They both stand equal.
Book Four |
Stage twenty : Asuka Comes to Japan | 32 pages - no color pages - letter column Actual story :
27 pages
Synopsis:
The UN pacific fleet is making its way towards Japan when an unknown,
submarine entity attacks it. The sixth Angel has arrived! The EVA Unit-02
carried by the fleet is activated and it fights the Angel, wounding it
severely. At this point, the story jumps some days forward to NERV
Japan where Misato, Akagi, Shinji and Rei are viewing a recording of the
battle. They are all equally impressed by Asuka's skill (except perhaps
Rei; it's hard to say what she thinks). The pilots are scheduled to meet
each other the next evening.
The very next day, as Shinji is returning from school with Toji and
Kensuke, they spot a girl at an arcade with a short skirt and an equally
short temper. They stop and... ahem... admire the scenery :). Noticing the
trio, the girl demands a peeping fee. The situation degenerates into a
verbal brawl, until the girl bumps into another arcade player, ruining his
game.
Summoning his gang, the boy throws threats around until the girl takes
care of the thugs with a sudden display of martial arts skills. When the
police arrives, she runs away. Shinji is the only one who managed to get
hit in the brawl.
Returning to the NERV HQ, Shinji runs into the same girl at the
doorway. He sees the ID card she is holding and to his horror realizes who
the girl is...
What is different:
-
To put it shortly: Everything Is Different! Sadamoto-sama takes a
radical turn away from the anime plot, spinning a completely different
story.
-
Misato, Shinji & company never travel to the UN fleet.
-
So, Asuka has to deal with Gaghiel alone...
which she accomplishes in thirty-six seconds! The EVA does not fall
underwater.
-
Ryoji Kaji doesn't make his scheduled appearance
-
After this, even the vague similarities with the anime end. Read the
description above for the alternate storyline.
Notes:
-
There is one thing just like in the anime; Toji and Asuka
take an instant dislike of each other!
-
The EVA had its own umbilical cable brought along with it. It is
visible in several panels.
-
Shinji didn't look hard enough at Asuka. He probably would have
recognized the 'hairpins' Asuka was wearing as EVA pilot equipment had
he noticed them.
-
So, Asuka knows martial arts... Is this some kind of an insider
joke? Usually in the movies it is 'the Japanese guy' who knows karate,
but in this case none of the native Japanese (Shinji, Toji, Kensuke) are
able to defend themselves.
-
But in a way this makes sense. As the Eva's are largely dependent on
the abilities of their pilots, knowledge of unarmed combat skills could
be a big advantage in close combat with the Angels. We'll see...
-
And just watch Kensuke's reactions on Asuka... ^^

Stage twenty-one : The Uninvited | 32 pages - no color pages - letter column Actual story : 24 pages
Synopsis:
Now that the Second Child has arrived to NERV, it is time for formal
introductions. During the meeting, Misato notices that Shinji has gotten a
bruise on his face... Asuka jumps to explain what happened, but turns it
all around! She claims that Shinji saved her from some punks that were
pucking on her, and warns Shinji not to snitch. Meanwhile, at Gendo's
office... Kaji delivers a sealed briefcase to Ikari, which contains
something he suspects as the real reason of Gaghiel's attack:
Adam sample.
Down at the cafeteria, Asuka is enjoying the spotlight when Kaji comes
in. Misato is obviously not happy to see him again. Kaji recognizes Shinji, saying that he is famous name in his business, and
compliments his
skills. Asuka is not happy about the sudden competition...
At school, Kaji and Kensuke are shocked to hear the she-devil they met
earlier is a pilot. Kaji pities Shinji for having to work with her
(Kensuke is envious )... when Asuka steps into the classroom. It appears
she will be attending the same class as they. Needless to say, the 'hot
outlander' causes quite a stir in the classroom.
When they are returning from school to NERV Asuka realizes that Shinji
is unaware of the real truth behind the second impact; she explains
him that it was not caused by a meteorite but by an explosion at the First
Angel's excavation site. She also mentions that NERV's real job is to
prevent the Third Impact. When Rei walks by, Asuka runs after her. Looks
like she has taken an instant dislike of the 'commander's pet'. When the
'discussion' starts to degenerate, Shinji interferes... and Asuka,
angered, runs away.
What is different:
-
Just like the last stage, this follows a pretty custom plot
construct. There are almost no similarities between the anime and manga
here, except for the scene at Gendo's office and the meeting of Misato
and Kaji.
-
And by now you must have noticed that anime episode 7 has
been skipped completely. No Jet-alone mech (whew!) and no fan service
(bummer!).
Notes:
-
Yeah, Asuka is different... while the anime mainly
concentrated on Asuka's infatuation with Kaji and her obsession to be
the number one pilot, the manga explores some... other aspects of her
personality as well.
-
But Shinji has changed too. When he jumps into Rei's defense (page
26), he displays characteristics that he was lacking (at this point) in
the anime.
-
In the same scene, notice Rei's surprised looks... while back in the
cafeteria nothing would affect her detached attitude (page 15, note how
her lack of reaction is singled out).
-
Asuka's misunderstanding... look at page 27 panels 1 and 4. While
this is one of the more obvious ones it serves as a good example how
things are implied instead of explained in NGE. Kinda subtly forces you
to think 'what is happening' and 'what has happened earlier'.
-
I also think it worth pointing out how much Sadamoto's art has
changed during the series. Grab some Book 1 stages and then compare with
Book 4. For example, the characters' faces are much more alive in the
latter stages.

Stage twenty-two : Asuka attacks | 32 pages - no color pages - letter column Actual story : 24 pages
Synopsis:
Ryoji Kaji is getting re-acquainted with his old friends at NERV; the
next target of his attention is dr. Akagi. But he has chosen a poor time
to make friendly passes at Ritsuko: Misato is in the same room, just...
around the corner, and hears everything. Misato get quite mad at Kaji, but
he doesn't see the point; didn't they break up a long time ago?
A sound of an alarm interrupts them. An unknown submerged object is approaching
Tokyo-3, and NERV quickly identifies it as an Angel. The EVA
Units 01 and 02 are scrambled and sent to meet the enemy along an EVA
elevator that reaches all the way to the coastline. Tokyo's own intercept
system is still under repair so they cannot face the Angel inside the
city. Shinji is less than thrilled with the prospect of fighting with
Asuka. She on the other hand claims they don't need him for the
operations; her skills are more than enough.
The pilots get ready to meet the enemy amongst the ruined coastline
that once was old Tokyo, and soon enough the Angel makes it's appearance,
jumping out of the coastal waters. This strange-looking one is Israfel. Shinji
gives Asuka back-up with a machine gun while she charges the Angel with an
EVA-sized naginata (like a spear but the blade has a cutting edge). She
penetrates the AT field easily and cuts Israfel neatly into two halves.
For all practical purposes the battle seems over and the pilots prepare to
leave... when Shinji notices the Angel is still alive and moving!
In front of the stunned pilots, the two halves of the Angel separate
and form into two slightly smaller replicas (well, almost replicas) of the
original, apparently unharmed by the blow Asuka dealt to their "big
brother". The fight starts anew...
What is different:
-
And now, back to the scheduled program... this stage, the battle
against Israfel, follows the anime plot very closely.
-
Units 01 and 02 are brought to the water's edge along a "linear line
route", a metro-tunnel like device that apparently connects to Tokyo-3's
EVA elevator systems.
-
Shinji notices that Israfel has two cores instead of just
one, but NERV doesn't understand the meaning of this before it's too
late.
-
Shinji gives Asuka backup with a rifle as she attacks. Also, this
was as things were supposed to happen here; Asuka is not acting "against
the plan" when she charges the Angel.
Notes:
-
The Stage number on page 3 is all wrong - surely this is not Stage
14!
-
Asuka drops the umbilical cable when she attacks! On page 15, panel
1 you can still see it attached, but as she charges it is no logger there
(page 18, panel 2; page 20, panel 1; page 23, panel 5).
-
Israfel's Yin-Yang symbology is quite obvious... one more clue to
the dual nature of this Angel.
-
Sadamoto is experimenting again: note the slightly SD-ish drawings
of Asuka on page 12 panel 2 and page 23 panel 3.
-
A spoiler for those who haven't yet seen the anime series... Kaji is
quite wrong in his assumption that Ritsuko doesn't have a boyfriend. As
you probably remember, she's having an affair with Gendo, just like her
mother did

Stage twenty-three: Try, try again |
Not Available
Sorry folks, but I have been unable to find this issue of NGE
anywhere... it appears the collectors have finally found this series too
and scoured the stores empty of ALL the available issues, the older ones
included. And when there is high demand but low supply one must act
extremely quickly to secure one's own copy... In fact I was very close to
missing the next stage as well: I got the last one available in the
store.
Stage twenty-four : Dissonance | 32 pages - no color pages - letter column Actual story : 23 pages
Synopsis:
What is different:
-
For starters, this is stage revolves around the conversations Shinji
and Asuka never had in the anime version.
-
Shinji and Asuka are given their own room where they must live
together while preparing for the fight against Israfel.
-
Shinji meets his father, Gendo, and makes an attempt to
communicate...
-
Kaji shows up at the gym where Shinji and Asuka practice their
battle choreography. Yeah, no exercises with that funny mat.
-
Asuka plays a joke (cough cough) on Shinji and later suggests he
might have a father complex.
-
We don't see Shinji attempting to steal a kiss from Asuka while she
sleeps. At least, not yet.
-
If we want to get really picky... Shinji and Asuka sleep in
western-style beds instead of Japanese ones.
-
We get some actual proof of Misato spying on Shinji & Asuka! So,
she was not just content on writing a diary of Shinji's activities...
^_^
Notes:
-
Looking at the calendar near the beginning of this stage we see
Sadamoto has placed these events during the time which is skipped over
in the anime. So, there is no story conflict, we just never saw these
things 'on-screen' ^_^.
-
Asuka reveals she has been conceived in a test tube. And, since her
parents were top scientists she must be something special too... the
reason behind Asuka's superiority complex.
-
The text on the cover (Shinji and Asuka move in together!) reveals
to be quite a joke when you consider the facts WHY they moved in
together... ^_^
-
Hey! Asuka takes off... those EVA interface hairpins! (I bet you
thought of something else first) Never though I would see THIS day...
^_^;
-
It is TEA Asuka is drinking, not Coke or Pepsi...
-
Check out those NERV-brand audio devices!
-
Note Misato's words on page 5 panel 4: "He wouldn't have the guts." Well,
gee, thanks for the confidence! (The subject of the discussion notwithstanding)
The face of the stage:
- Shinji, page 9, panel 1 - "AUUUUUUGHH!" (But really, we are missing
the traditional nosebleed here!)
- And of course, when Mr. Iceman steps in he is always THE FACE!

Stage twenty-five : Shall We Dance? | 32 pages - no color pages - letter column Actual story : 23 pages
Synopsis:
The projected date of battle with Israfel is fast approaching, but
Shinji and Asuka still aren't in synch with each other... Shinji isn't
learning fast enough and Asuka isn't willing to lower her abilities to his
level. When Misato pairs Shinji with Rei instead for one dance, suddenly
every piece falls into place; they're in perfect synch already, implying
the problem must be with Asuka, not Shinji. Only because Unit-00 is under
repairs prevents Misato from instantly switching Asuka to Rei. Asuka,
angry and embarrassed, runs away; Misato's "jealousy gambit" failed.
Kaji advises Shinji to follow Asuka, telling him this is his job too.
He finds her brooding in a garden outside the NERV HQ. She vents her anger
on him, asking why SHE is being punished foot Shinji's incompetence. She
gets even angrier when Shinji in turn asks isn't she getting tired of
playing a "good girl" in front of Misato and Kaji. He says he understands
Asuka, but she doesn't want to believe him... Kaji, listening nearby,
draws his on conclusions of the encounter.
Later in the evening, Asuka still hasn't returned. Misato is getting
worried, thinking perhaps they should prepare to use Rei instead, but Kaji
advises against this; there is still one more night before the battle,
which just might be enough.
Later, Asuka finally returns home (not home exactly, she and Shinji
were given a separate place to live for the duration of the training). For
starters, she breaks the spy camera inside of the loudspeaker hanging in
the ceiling. When Shinji asks what she is doing, her reply is simple:
training. Meanwhile, Misato wonders why the camera has lost the visual
feed and is about to go check on Shinji and Asuka, but Kaji stops him,
telling it might be awkward if she busted in there... besides, he and
Misato are alone, sot hey might just as well enjoy each other's company...
she gives Kaji an open-palmed reply, asking what makes him think she has
forgiven him.
Asuka is determined to get her act with Shinji perfect by tomorrow, no
matter what. She wants to show Misato and the First [child], she explains,
that she can make it. Shinji can only admire her unstoppable drive... so
they try again. And, hey, presto! Perfect sync! Shall we dance? ^_^
What is different:
-
Well, we're treading in unfamiliar waters again... most of what
happens in this stage never took place in the anime.
-
The practice is still taking place in the gym instead of Misato's
home.
-
Which might be the reason why Toji and Kensuke never stumble into
the scene.
-
Kaji is present when Rei embarrasses Asuka. Ritsuko is nowhere to be
seen (and makes only a brief appearance in this stage.)
-
Towards the end of this stage, Shinji and Asuka seem to developed an
understanding between each other... something which never quite happened
in the anime.
Notes:
-
What's up anyway with Misato moving Shinji and Asuka together, and
observing them? Moving into matchmaking business, hmm? Or planning a
documentary on human behavior, eh?
-
Kaji makes yet another pass at Misato; he never gives up, does he?
^_^
-
Those loudspeakers are NERV-brand, too! Where I can get a complete
set? ...without the cameras, of course.
-
Notice how people (and the photos on the walls) switch positions
several times on pages 4-9 of the flipped (non-collector's) edition...
the joys of mirror-imaging. -__-
-
In some panels Shinji is lying on Asuka's bed... more joys of
mirror-imaging. No, I'm not suggesting anything here! Wouldn't cross my
mind! ^_^
-
Sadamoto seems to broaden Kaji's "job description" into new areas in
this stage. Since when Kaji-san became an expert on child psychology
too?
-
And speaking of extra skills... exactly where did Rei learn to
dance? Also, she's been observing Asuka and Shinji for only a day and
has already learned the steps! Talk about good memory...

Misato, page 11, panel 1 - "The plan backfired!" [Back to top]
Stage twenty-six: One Moment, One
Heart | 32 pages - no color pages - letter column Actual story : 23 pages
Synopsis:
The day for the battle has come! The Angel Israfel's two halves have
activated again and are heading straight towards Tokyo-3, and to make
matters worse they are breaking through the defenses earlier than MAGI had
expected! NERV is ready to send the EVAs to meet the threat, but their
pilots, Shinji and Asuka, are nowhere to be seen...
Angered by this, Misato dashes for the pilots quarters, only to find
both of them still asleep. She drags them up and to change into their plug suits, and soon they are ready to face the Angel. Misato is still full
of doom and gloom as they had no time for any last-minute practice. The
pilots, however disagree; they are in a perfect sync, and have the plan memorized
by heart.
Israfel enters Tokyo-3 and the EVAs are launched. The battle begins...
in perfect harmony, the EVAs follow the plan step-by-step, thwarting the Angel's
every attack while landing devastating blows upon it... and in the
end, they smash its power sources into pieces! The Angel explodes, and the
NERV staff rejoices. Shinji and Asuka, exhausted, fall asleep...
What is different:
-
Shinji and Asuka are asleep as the Angel barges its way towards
Tokyo-3.
-
Misato thinks the battle is already lost, as she assumes the pilots aren't
in sync...
-
Surprisingly, the actual battle follows the anime quite closely.
-
Israfel's halves don't merge before their explosion.
-
As the Angel is defeated, Misato clamps onto Kaji, then realizes what she has done and gives him a good slap. ^_^;
-
Shinji and Asuka don't start arguing after the battle. Ok, their do
blow their landing, but Asuka actually praises Shinji a bit.
-
And the pilots fall asleep after the battle.
Notes:
-
This stage coincides with the end of anime episode 9. While it also
wraps book 4, it is only halfway through NGE 0:5.
-
Gendo actually smiles a bit on page 21 panel 4 - always an event worth
noting!
-
According to the editor, Sadamoto skips over the next two Angels,
Sandalphon and Matariel, moving directly to Sahaquiel. Bummer! I was
looking forwards to that arachnid Angel... -__-
